1, CNSST Foundation Introduction

About CNSST

CNSST Foundation(CNSST), formerly known as Chinese New Settlers Services Trust, began in the founder Jenny Wang’s home garage in September 1998. As a registered charitable trust, CNSST Foundation offers culturally and linguistically appropriate services to both Ethnic new settlers and the community as a whole in New Zealand.

Our Mission:

To improve the quality of life of the Ethnic New Zealanders.

Our Goal:

To establish Ethnic community multi-service centres and to help all the new settlers to integrate and contribute to New Zealand society through our services delivery.

Our Vision:

To work towards meeting the needs of the Ethnic seniors, children and young people, and all other new settlers, and to facilitate the successful integration of the new settlers into wider New Zealand society.

Our Key Services:

Social Services: NZ government approved L2 community service provider:

• Professional social work and counselling interventions;

• Employment and enterprise services for both the migrant job seekers and employers;

• Newcomers’ settlement support;

• Maternal health, nutrition and physical activity programme;

• Asian cultural events & traditional festival celebration.

Education: NZQA approved PTE delivering tertiary education to both international and local students, including:

• The English language and kiwi culture programme for newcomers;

• Free adult literacy and numeracy English courses;

• Employment coaching and vocational training, e.g. MYOB & XERO courses to local small business and new graduates, NZQA Approved Food Safety certificate;

• Chinese Cultural Competency Programme for the Non-native speakers.

• Holiday programmes, Chinese language and cultural training and after school programmes for local young people at our five cultural learning centres in Auckland on site and online.

Social Housing: NZ government approved social housing provider, in partnership with HUD to run a social housing for local senior migrants and local families with wraparound wellbeing support services.

International Department:

• Licensed Immigration consultation services for NZ and Australia;

• Asian community engagement and research projects;

• CNSST volunteer and student centre;

• Qualified translation services;

• User pay CV writing & employment skill training for job seekers;

• International study tour projects and student placement programmes;

• International cultural experience trip to China.

About the Scholarship

CNSST Kiwi-Dragon Cultural Exchange Scholarship (hereafter: KD Scholarship) was initiated and is administered by Chinese New Settlers Services Trust (CNSST).

The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide financial support to the local young Kiwis who are not of Chinese descent with financial difficulties a meaningful Chinese cultural experience trip.

The scholarship is funded by CNSST through its organized fundraising events.

Scholarship Coverage

The aim of the Kiwi-Dragon Scholarship is to provide an opportunity for local students to gain an understanding of or enrich their knowledge of Chinese culture so as to bring positive impact to the development of their social and cultural values in their life journey.

The scholarship covers:

  • At least 10 hours of Chinese language learning and a cultural learning programme in New Zealand before departure;
  • A bout 10 days overseas cultural experience trip to China, including international round-trip ticket, international travel insurance, visa application fees and etc,.;
  • All food and accommodation costs in China, transportation and tuition fees for a series of Chinese cultural programmes and activities in China;
  • Essential traveling cost, eg: luggage or T-shirt etc,.

Please note: the scholarship excludes all spending on personal items or items unspecified above.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria & Application Process

To be eligible, the applicant needs to show:

  • They are between 13 – 18 years of age, are in good health and of good character, and
  • Evidence of NZ citizenship/residency, and
  • Not of Chinese descent, and
  • Aspiration to learn Chinese language or culture, and
  • Evidence of good academic achievement at school, or
  • Evidence of active participation in social or cultural activities, or
  • Evidence of positive contribution to local community, and
  • Evidence on a low household income (WINZ or community services card etc,)

Additional Requirements:

  1. All successful Scholarship recipients may require to give a speech at the CNSST Fundraising Gala Dinner;
  2. All successful Scholarship recipients are required to submit a written reflection of their Chinese cultural experience and learning journey of the programmes they attend after returning to NZ;
  3. Some Scholarship recipients may be invited to share their experience with other local youth at CNSST events;
  4. Some or all the Scholarship recipients will be asked to allow use of their written reflections on their experience for CNSST’s promotional purposes or to attend in person CNSST events to relate their experience.

– Application deadline: 5pm on 8th December 2023
– CNSST’s panel will review each application and invite suitable candidates for
an interview and will make a final decision on selection.
– The successful candidates will be informed respectively by the panel within 5 working days.

Please note: CNSST reserves the discretion to make any amendments to the application process and reserves the right of final selection of candidates.
