International Collaboration refers to legitimate collaborative activities undertaken in New Zealand such as
- Organizing joint research projects
- Business related visits to New Zealand
- International staff training and exchange programmes
- Attending scheduled conferences and events in New Zealand
CNSST Foundation’s immigration service can apply, on your behalf, for the requisite visa for:

The following information provides an understanding of requisite visa types for conference attendance and academic purposes in New Zealand.
Conference visas
Purpose: Overseas conference participants can come to New Zealand on visitor visas to attend conferences.
What you should know:
- Citizens from many countries (full list) do not need a visa to visit New Zealand and can simply qualify for the Visa Waiver Visitor Visa on arrival. However, Visa requirements are different for each country.
- Visitors to New Zealand must hold a passport that is valid for at least three months after the planned departure date from New Zealand (or one month past the date you intend to leave if the government issuing your passport has consular representation in New Zealand).
- It is recommended to obtain an Invitation Letter from the conference organisers to support your visa application to attend, while the name in the letter must be the same as in your passport.
Academic Visitor Visa
Purpose:
To visit New Zealand as an academic and take part in teaching, educational, professional management or research activities.
What you should know:
- The visa allows for stays up to 3 months and to work in New Zealand as an academic.
- The visa will only be valid for doing the specific academic work for which invited.
- Evidence of sufficient funds to support stay in New Zealand or of sponsorship is required
- A letter of invitation from the tertiary education institute where work is intended will be required.
A work visa will be required for:
- Staying in New Zealand for longer than 3 months in any calendar year.
- Taking part in work activities that aren’t related to teaching, educational, professional management or research activities.
‘Special Visitor Category: Visiting Academic’ visa is permissible if the activities of the applicant are defined as “pedagogical, educational, professional management or research activities”.
